MEDSAR Day

On 1st June 2024 MEDSAR association, an association for all medical students in Rwanda had a scientific day with a topic of "end teenage pregnancy”and exploring the gap in adolescents sexual reproductive health and rights.

It was attended by medical students from university of Rwanda, ASOME, and UGHE. Also there was medical Doctors, ministry of health and distinct non governmental organisations. It took place at Lemigo hotel.

Medical students had enough time to talk about early teenage pregnancies which has become a serious challenge to the society of Rwanda. 

During this meeting, there was a panel discussion and among the panelists there were researchers on sexual reproductive health, medical doctors, teenager, and people who represented their organisation.

They discussed about what can be done to ensure that all teenagers get information about sexual reproductive health. They also discussed about what can be done to ensure equity in accessing these informations where it was found out that youth with disabilities don’t get all the informations they need because of barrier in communication.

These issues concerns mainly youth with hearing disability where it was seen that not many care providers understand and are able to speak sign language. At the end of discussion it was agreed upon that care providers are going to be trained on sign language.

Another topic that the panelists discussed about was whether to allow use of contraceptive methods for teenagers and if there are no negative effects to them. They came to a conclusion that this idea must be legally accepted and that it will contribute a lot in fighting this teenage pregnancies that are prevailing in Rwanda.
